Surgical Orthodontics and Airway Correction in Murray
Safe and Effective Surgical Treatment for Confident Smiles
At Parker Orthodontics, we are dedicated to finding solutions to any orthodontic problem our Salt Lake City and Murray patients experience. If previous treatments have been ineffective, our team works with a trusted surgeon to perform orthognathic procedures, also known as jaw surgery, to treat complex situations. This type of procedure can also provide airway correction when you experience obtrusive sleep apnea. Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a dental specialty that can improve severe issues including difficult bite, jawbone abnormalities, and malocclusion.
Our Murray practice is open Monday, 9am to 5pm, Tuesday through Thursday, 8am to 5pm, and on Friday, from 9am to 1pm. Our staff members speak English and Spanish. Make sure to bring your insurance card so we can check what your coverage includes. If you need payment options, we have several options available at our office.

When Do We Recommend Surgical Orthodontics?
Surgical orthodontics can help adults after they have completed their jaw growth, usually between late teens and early twenties.
Jaw surgery can help:
- Improve biting and chewing
- Reduce or eliminate swallowing or speech problems
- Prevent excessive teeth wear
- Restore facial balance
- Provide relief for obstructive sleep apnea
- Relive pain due to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder and other jaw issues
And of course, you can enjoy a brighter smile after orthognathic surgery, which can boost your confidence.
What to Expect When Getting Orthognathic Surgery
Dr. Parker and your surgeon develop your treatment plan together. We can capture x-rays and precise digital impressions of your teeth at our comfortable practice thanks to the advanced dental imaging equipment we use.
The oral and maxillofacial surgeon we collaborate with will perform your orthognathic surgery at a hospital. The procedure happens under general anesthesia and can take up to several hours. A hospital stay may be needed.
Your surgeon usually performs the procedure inside your mouth, which prevents facial scars. They alter your jawbones to bring them into an adequate alignment. The surgeon can use tiny bone plates, screws, wires, and rubber bands to secure your jaws into their new position. The screws will integrate with your bone structure over time.
After the procedure, your doctor will provide instructions about:
- What you can eat
- Oral hygiene tips
- Discontinuing tobacco use
- Avoiding strenuous activity
- Pain medication
You can usually return to work or school one to three weeks after surgery. Initial jaw healing takes about six weeks and complete recovery can require up to 12 weeks. We will finish optimizing your teeth alignment with braces for up to a year after surgery. Once you are fully healed, you will need to wear a retainer to help maintain your enhanced smile.
If you have a severe case of malocclusion, don’t worry! Contact Parker Orthodontics in Murray today at (801) 515-4361 to learn how we can help you with orthognathic surgery.
