When Should My Child Start Seeing an Orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children get an orthodontic screening by age seven. This helps identify any orthodontic concerns that may require treatment. Early diagnosis and care can generally ensure proper growth for the jaw and permanent teeth.
Treatment for certain orthodontic problems is more effective once your child enters their teen years once all their permanent teeth have erupted. Similarly, some skeletal orthodontic issues only get addressed once your child’s growth is more advanced, if not completed.
We always design individualized treatment plans and if your child isn’t ready for care yet, we will place them on our orthodontic observation program. There is no fee for this program, and it helps us monitor our young patients’ dental development for optimal treatment planning and minimize the time they will need to wear braces to improve their oral health. We usually see our patients on the observation program every six to eight months to review their progress.
Our team collaborates with your general dentist and share with their office any recommendations we have. Patients who wear aligners and other orthodontic appliances can require more effort to keep their teeth and gums clean, so you want to make sure to see your family dentist for routine check-ups and professional cleanings at least every six months, including during orthodontic treatment.
Benefits of Pediatric Orthodontics
Early orthodontic diagnosis and care can help:
- Teeth erupt and jaws grow in their adequate positions
- Regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches
- Preserve space for permanent teeth
- Avoid the need for tooth extraction of permanent teeth
- Correct thumb sucking
- Prevent abnormal swallowing
- Eliminate speech problems
Braces and other orthodontic treatments can improve dental function besides enhancing someone’s smile. Pediatric orthodontic care can increase the longevity of your child’s permanent teeth over their lifetime. While some concerns may require future or additional orthodontic care during your child’s teenage years, including to complete alignment correction, early orthodontic solutions set your little one up for success when it comes to their dental health.
