An important part of orthodontic treatment plans is the use of a retention device, or retainer. These are typically fitted to a patient at the end of the orthodontic treatment, upon removal of the appliance.
Caring for Your Retainer
During the retention phase it is important to continue to brush and floss regularly, as well as thoroughly clean the retainer. Food particles and plaque can accumulate in the retainer just as easily as in your teeth. Make sure to brush your retainer well before and after use. This will ensure that the retainers do not smell, taste better and are free of plaque and bacteria. Only use cold or warm water as hot water can distort the form of the retainer. Do not boil, microwave, or put your retainers in the dishwasher.
