Toys for Tots 2007

2007 was our first year sponsoring the Toys for Tots program and it was very successful! We will continue to sponsor this program for years to come. For anyone that is not familiar with Toy for Tots here is a little information: The objectives of Toys for Tots are to help needy children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas; to play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable natural resources - our children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future.

From The Marine Reserves in Washington, DC – January 16, 2008 – The results of the 60th annual U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Campaign, conducted during October, November and December 2007, have been tabulated. The results are: U.S. Marines distributed 16.6 million new toys to over 7.5 million needy youngsters throughout the nation. This was one of the most successful campaigns in the 60 year history of Toys for Tots.

As you can see this is a reward for everyone involved. We look forward to another successful year for 2008!

Give Kids A Smile Day

On Friday, February 1, 2008, our office participated along with other dentists around the nation to provide free oral health care services to thousands of low-income children across the country. The ADA’s sixth annual Give Kids A Smile® national children’s dental access program, during National Children’s Dental Health Month, will enhance the oral health of large numbers of needy children. Give Kids A Smile activities also highlight for policy makers the ongoing challenges that low-income and disabled children face in accessing dental care.

Detecting cavities before they become a problem is a vital job of the dentists at Parker Smiles. Even the smallest decay can threaten the strength of the entire tooth, so finding cavities at their earliest stages is very important to us. Many people do not know that traditional poking and prodding is actually only 50-75% effective, because cavities can hide in some very hard to see places (including under the surface of the tooth). That’s where DIAGNOdent comes in!

DIAGNOdent is a revolutionary new technology in which Parker Smiles has invested. It’s a new, fast, easy way to detect cavities that are impossible to spot with traditional tools, while you can be comfortable and pain-free at the same time.

How does it work?

DIAGNOdent allows Parker Smiles dentists to inspect your teeth using a simple laser. A baseline reading is gathered from healthy tooth enamel, and then a scan is performed around your mouth and into suspect areas. DIAGNOdent reports back to your dentist where tooth enamel is different from your healthy baseline reading. With pinpoint accuracy, our dentists can tell where there has been enamel softening, which can be a problem area, all the way up to a definite reading of a cavity that will require filling.

With DIAGNOdent, your Parker Smiles dentist can precisely catch decay areas sooner, resulting in fewer expensive procedures in the long-run. There are no x-rays required, and it’s a very comfortable experience. Finding decay in its earliest stages means fillings will be simpler and shallower, resulting in less tooth enamel having to be removed.

Cavities are very good at hiding, and they won’t always be spotted by x-rays. The smallest amount of decay in its earliest stages can be found by DIAGNOdent. The immediate feedback provided by this technology means fewer fillings, faster appointments, and lest dental treatments over time. DIAGNOdent is proven to be 90% accurate and allows our dentists to avoid unnecessary exploration of teeth that are suspected to have cavities.

Dental implants are natural in appearance, and are very strong and durable. When it comes to replacing missing teeth and restoring the necessary functionality of your smile, dental implants are one of the most successful dental procedures available. Procedures such dental bridges or dentures are very effective, but cannot compare to the longevity, effectiveness, and strength of a dental implant. Dental implants provide a simple remedy with proven results. They are the most state-of-the-art treatment available and have few disadvantages. The time and money saved over the long-term by dental implants cannot be matched by other procedures or treatments, such as dentures.

Implants are a permanent solution to tooth loss. They are also very effective when used alongside other restorative procedures such as bridges, where they can provide permanent support for the replacement of multiple missing teeth, or with dentures to increase stability and reduce gum tissue irritation.

How are dental implants applied?

A dental implant from Parker Smiles is practically indistinguishable from other teeth, both in appearance and functionality. Dental implants are connected to living bone to provide incredible structural integrity. This is done by guiding a titanium screw that will hold the dental implant in place. Our dentists have great skill and expertise, and take extreme care to not damage any vital jaw or face structures.

Dental implants are usually applied in a single appointment, but they do require a period of osseointegration. This is where the root of the dental implant must anchor itself to the bone of the jaw. A temporary cover screw is placed on top of the dental implant to allow the spot to heal. The osseointegration process can take three to six months to heal, but the end result is a permanent anchor for new teeth, dentures, crowns, or bridges. Once healed, a temporary crown is placed on top of the dental implant which allows the gum to grow and shape itself in a natural way. The final stage is complete when the temporary crown is replaced with a permanent one.

Who qualifies for a dental implant?

The candidacy for dental implants will vary from person to person. Only a Parker Smiles dentist will be able to tell you which procedure is right for you. Dental implants are among the most successful procedures in dentistry, but require great care to make sure they become permanent.

Cosmetic dentures could be the answer for you. Cosmetic dentures are beautiful high-end dentures, crafted by the cosmetic dentists at Parker Smiles. Traditional complete dentures are easy to spot, but cosmetic dentures are made to look as real as possible using special acrylic and porcelain. Cosmetic dentures will give you new confidence in your beautiful smile, and no one will be able to tell they’re dentures!

Cosmetic Dentures vs. Traditional Dentures

The teeth on traditional dentures are unrealistically lined up like a picket fence and often look unnatural. Cosmetic dentures are different in many ways. The goal of cosmetic dentures is to craft a one of a kind, natural smile just for you. There are slight variations in the size and shape of teeth on cosmetic dentures, as well as slight differences in color to produce a natural looking smile. Our dentists use video-imaging computers to simulate how you will look with your new teeth. Many things are taken into consideration, such as how your face will be affected by your new cosmetic dentures. Because the width and height of your dentures will affect the muscles in your face, cosmetic dentures can be considered a non-surgical facelift!

Creating cosmetic dentures that are perfect for your mouth is an art form. The cosmetic dentists at Parker Smiles have many years of experience and are on the cutting edge of technology to give you the natural smile you deserve!

A dental bridge is sometimes called a false tooth. It is cemented between two porcelain crowns to fill in the area left by the missing tooth, or teeth. The crowns are attached onto your teeth that are surrounding the missing tooth area. Fixed bridges are highly effective, mostly because they are permanent and cannot be taken out of the mouth like dentures. They last a very long time, 10-20 years in some instances, with proper oral hygiene. Bridges look natural in appearance, and only require 2 visits to Parker Smiles.

How are Bridges applied?

Our Parker Smiles cosmetic dentists will prepare your teeth on both sides of the space for your bridge. This is done by removing an area of each tooth to make room for the crowns that will hold the bridge in place. Our dentist will then make an impression of your teeth that will become the model for the bridge. The impression is sent off to a laboratory where the bridge will be created to match your other teeth. You will be given a temporary bridge while it is being made.

When the bridge is complete, your temporary bridge will be replaced by your permanent one. It will be checked and adjusted to make sure it does not affect your bite. When everything is in place, the bridge will be cemented to your teeth.

Crowns are highly durable, and an excellent way to restore your smile. After some time, they will eventually need to be re-cemented or replaced from normal wear and tear. CEREC Crowns from Parker Smiles can be applied in just one visit!

Inlays and onlays are made from porcelain or composite resin. They are “tooth-colored,” so they are great for people who want to replace metal fillings in their mouth.

Dental Inlays

If there is decay or damage lying within the indented top surface of a rear tooth, a dental inlay will be used to repair it. During the first visit, an impression of your tooth is taken. A temporary inlay is applied to fill in the space. The impression is sent to a lab, where an inlay will be created to match your tooth’s specifications. On your second visit, the permanent inlay will replace the temporary one. Only a mild level of tenderness will be felt in the treated area, but as soon as you leave our office you will be able to go about your life with no downtime.

Inlays are a much better alternative than metal fillings, and are great for replacing old metal fillings to improve your smile.

Dental Onlays

Onlays are similar to inlays, but they are used to treat decay that extends to one or more of the cusps. The process to apply an onlay is very similar to applying an inlay. Onlays also help to conserve more tooth structure because there is little removal of a tooth’s surface. The best benefit of dental onlays is that they save damaged teeth, and can prevent more expensive procedures such as dental crowns and dental bridges.

• Onlays and inlays are not affected by temperature changes like metal fillings, so there is no chance of weakening or fracturing the tooth further.
• They conserve more of the tooth than metal fillings in the treatment process.
• They can strengthen teeth by 75%, and can last up to 30 years, which is much longer than traditional fillings.
